The Tonnellerie de Mercurey is based on the edge of the wine village of Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise of Burgundy, France.
Tonnellerie de Mercurey was bought by Nicolas Tarteret in 1992. At the time it was an artisanal, family-run business making 2 barrels a day.
Today, there is a modern, state-of-the-art facility on the site of the original cooperage. However, Nicolas has always adhered to
the traditional ideals by which the cooperage was founded on. "We remain a family-run company with a human size."
Tonnellerie de Mercurey barrels have always been traditionally fire-bent and fire-toasted. The current cooperage was opened in
July 2009. Significant investment was made to ensure high standards of quality control, and thereby safety and production have become the norm.
Today Tonnellerie de Mercurey prides itself on:
- A team of skilled Master Coopers providing a range of toasts to suit all wine styles and varieties.
- Certified ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 to ensure quality control, customer service and traceability.
- A humidified controlled storage facility.
With the construction of the new cooperage, Tonnellerie de Mercurey uses this opportunity to further reduce the risk of chemicals (TCA/TBA and their
precursors) and other contamination by:
- Ensuring all building materials comply with French alimentary rules.
- Installation of a pure water plant.
- A modern extraction facility to remove all dust/contaminants.
- Regular analysis of the air, water and wood in the cooperage.
- Regular consultation with Vec’teour laboratories Beaune.
